Samantha
Samantha is a year
and a half old Red-fronted Macaw. She was hatched at Wendy’s Parrots on
She stayed with her parents and clutch mate for about 5 weeks and then was pulled for hand rearing. Samantha
was allowed to fledge and was not clipped until she could fly really well. However because she was going to a
family with
children, upon their request, Samantha was clipped prior to going to her new
home.
Baby
Samantha Samantha at barely 3 months of age
Sam’s family loved her very much and took excellent care of her. She continued to be a very well adjusted
little girl. But when their new human baby was found to be allergic to all of their parrots, they decided to send
Samantha back to me. She very quickly became an important part of our family and a real favorite. She was
here for a month or two when I decided to train her for recall. I thought it would be fun and something I
should do with all my parrots. Samantha would just be the first. At this point I was Not committed to Free
flight, just to
recall training.
I won’t go through all the steps I took here, because I don’t want anyone to try this just by reading the steps I
took. When I decided I really wanted to do this I hired Hugh Choi, trainer of the Famous OTIS as a
consultant! He was absolutely fantastic! I can’t say enough about the experience and I highly recommend him.
Samantha is now a “Free Flier”! We fly every single day as long as it isn’t raining. She Loves to Fly! It
is excellent exercise and good for the total health of mind and body. She loves to bathe in the wet grass, chew
on rocks and climb around in trees. She loves to soar up in the sky like she was built to do. And it still amazes
me, that she comes
when I call her. How awesome is that?
