We
are currently breeding the Yellow Napes and the Double Yellow Headed
Amazons in addition to the Yellow Shouldered Amazon.
Amazons
are medium to large sized birds with a wonderful musky smell to them.
They live to eat and to play. With plenty of good food and a lot of
toys an Amazon will be very happy. Amazons are often the life of the
party showing off even for strangers. An Amazon can always find
something to entertain him or herself with. They seem to play from
sunup to sun set, except of course when they are eating.
Most make excellent talkers, some
better than others. And almost all of them LOVE to Sing! Amazons can
also be very noisy and most, but not all are too loud for an apartment.
Amazons also love to bathe! There is
nothing quite like watching an Amazon take a shower! It’s as if they
were in heaven. They strut, they fluff, they dance, and they flap.
There is just no mistaking their enjoyment.
Amazons are very clear using their
body language to show their likes and dislikes. They may not be as easy
going as some of the other species or as forgiving but they let you
know how they feel. It is up to their humans to learn this language and
then there are no surprises. Amazons can deliver a painful bite, but
rarely if ever without warning.
At Wendy’s Parrots we raise Double
Yellow Heads, Yellow Napes, Blue Fronts, Mexican Redheads and Yellow
Shoulders.
Our Double Yellow Heads are
the most striking in color and from my experience the most playful.
They talk well and they like to sing.
The Yellow Napes I’ve raised
make the best talkers and absolutely wonderful singers. They are big
birds with steady temperaments.
The Blue Fronts are beautiful,
gentle, can have huge vocabularies and also love to play.
The Mexican Redheads are
smaller than Double Yellow Heads and the Yellow Napes. They do not
usually talk as much or as well as the other three but are a bit calmer
in spirit.
Yellow Shouldered Amazons are
about the size of the Mexican Red Heads. I have to say they are my
personal favorite. They are good talkers, very playful, very
gentle and oh so sweet! It is hard to leave the Aviary when taking care
of the Yellow Shoulders. They are always crawling all over us. Get one
off to get out the door and its mate takes it’s place. They are
adorable birds who are really good with kids.
