Blue & Gold

A picture of a Blue and Gold Macaw is what first comes to the mind of many when they hear the word “Macaw”. There are many reasons why they are the most commonly found companion macaw. Not only are they gorgeous and very exotic looking, Blue & Golds are just plain fun! They very much remind me of a Labrador Puppy who never grows up! They love to play and they love to be with their people. It’s not surprising to hear the clickity clack of a pet Blue & Golds toenails as they walk through the house looking for one of their friends.

These birds have a lot of energy and need lots of room. This means a large cage and lots of out of cage time. They are very adaptable being able to play by themselves, with other birds and to engage in interactive games with their people. They also love to be outdoors, so harness training or an outside cage is almost a must for these guys. These are usually very friendly birds who get along well with the entire family, extended family included!

Most of your blue & Gold Macaws will learn to say a few words and phrases with a few of them obtaining an extensive vocabulary.

Although not the largest of the macaws, a Blue & Gold Macaw is a Big Bird! They have an adult weight of 900 – 1200 grams which is 2 – 2 ¾ pounds and have a wing span of 40 – 45 inches. Their overall body length is 32 – 35 inches.
