Our breeders are all housed outdoors year round in large walk-in flights. Our Aviaries are based on Dr. Lee Simmons Ultimate Habitat (see link for instructions). We took his great ideas and modified them to work with a walk-in Aviary. Each flight is protected from insects by mosquito screen, which is in turn protected by hardware cloth. There are no mosquitoes, flies, bees or wasps in our aviaries. This helps keep our birds free from sickness and disease.

There are safety aisle ways for feeding stations and nest boxes. These areas are also double protected with screen and hardware cloth. Our flights are partially covered by a roof with a section out in the middle like a large sunroof. This allows both sunshine and rain to enter the flights. Should the birds wish to get into the shade or out of the rain the roof is always there. The open section is also covered by screen and hardware cloth. Each flight has a bath bowl in addition to overhead sprinklers. During the winter months a double layer of heavy plastic is put up to keep the cold Texas winds off.

Different types of perches and swings are provided using different types of natural woods. All of our breeder pairs have a selection of toys to play with and or destroy.

Breeders not feeding young, are fed and watered twice a day. Freshly sprouted grains, seeds and legumes are fed in the morning along with fresh vegetables and fruits. In the evening they receive their seeds, nuts and pellets if they eat them. Pairs feeding babies are fed many times throughout the day including warm cooked foods. Items such as peanut butter on whole grain breads and cooked yams are given as treats to everyone.
